About Bellingen Zen Group

The Bellingen Zen Group was created to support participants in practicing the path of awakening by providing an environment where people can learn and practice Zen meditation with an emphasis on learning how to use practice in our everyday life.  Although our practice orientation is Buddhist, we welcome people from any background who wish to take up our approach to Zen training.  In this process, we are guided by the Group’s teacher, Ellen Davison.

Teacher
Ellen Davison Roshi

Ellen Davison has been practicing Buddhist Meditation for over  30 years, in both the Zen and Vipassana (Insight) traditions. After travelling and practising with teachers in Japan, India and North America she moved to Hawaii where she studied with Robert Aitken Roshi, founder of the Diamond Sangha. In Australia she continued her studies in the Zen tradition with Aitken Roshi, John Tarrant Roshi and Subhana Barzaghi Roshi. Ellen's interest in Buddhist teachings has also led her to continue to explore the practice of Insight (Vipassana) and Inquiry with Christopher Titmuss and Patrick Kearney.

Ellen is the resident teacher of the Kuan Yin Meditation Centre in Lismore and a guiding teacher for Bay Insight in Byron Bay and the Bellingen Zen Group in Bellingen. She is a teacher in the Zen tradition of the Diamond Sangha and a member of the Insight Teachers Circle, Australia. A major focus of her teaching is the application of meditation practice to everyday life.

Ellen is a psychologist and works as a student counsellor in TAFE. She teaches and leads retreats and workshops in both the Zen and Vipassana traditions within Australia. Contact Ellen at www.insightmeditationaustralia.org/ellen_davison.html

Practice Leader

Vince Jensen

Vince Jensen is the Practice Leader for the Bellingen Zen Group.  He received this title in November 2016 by Bellingen Zen Group's guiding teacher, Ellen Davison Roshi.

Vince commenced his Zen training in 1985, where he studied with Charlotte Joko Beck in San Diego until he immigrated to Australia in 1999.  At that time he began studying with Ezra Bayda and Gregg Howard, two of Joko's Dharma successors.

In 2009 Vince started sitting at the Bellingen Zen Group and studying with its founder Sexton Burke Roshi until Sexton's death in 2011.  Currently, Vince receives support in his role as Practice Leader  from both Gregg Howard and Ellen Davison Roshi.
